Debunking the MYTH of Resistant Gray Hair

Today, the average person begins to gray as early as their twenties, based upon several factors including the environment, stress levels, and just plain genetics. Women (and men) who gray younger do not view this as aging, but as a problem that needs to be solved and an excuse to experiment with hair color. The underlying reality of gray hair, however, is that very few end up with naturally beautiful silvery-white hair that looks youthful and gorgeous. Luckily, there are many viable options available to those whose graying begins at any age. The choice depends upon the client: age, lifestyle, commitment to upkeep, adventurous or timid nature, and many other factors that all help determine the optimum technique…but "there is no such thing as resistant gray in the hands of the properly trained colorist," insists Gerard Bollei Salon Master Colorist Anne Marie Barros (formerly of Rubann Salon).

A popular gray-hair technique is multi-shading for blonds, brunettes, or redheads. The concept behind multi-shading is that all strands of hair get color, starting from the deepest (which may be close to your naturally darkest strands) to the lightest. The idea is that when the hair grows, the lightest strands will blend into the gray, allowing the line of demarcation to be less noticeable. Depending on the degree of lightness or darkness, this technique allows 6 to 12 weeks between touch ups. If done correctly, the results are stunning and the hair remains healthy and shiny with reams of depth.

For those with less than 25% gray who do not want any major changes, I recommend using a semi-permanent color (such as Wella Color Touch) similar to your natural shade to blend in the grays. This allows 6 to 9 weeks between touch ups.

Color weaves in medium to heavy highlights are a subtle way to blend away the gray. Depending on the final desired look and the degree of lightness, this can be done with bleach or color. This process allows 2 to 3 months between touch ups.

Salt and pepper gray hair can be enhanced by adding medium to heavy silver streaks using a technique called Pearlizing, which strategically places silvery-white streaks in those areas that will best brighten the hair and face. This will allow you to be naturally gray, but prettier and brighter. This works best on those with silky hair, Nordic complexions and blue eyes and allows 2 to 3 months between retouches.

A technique known as Low-lighting adds dark streaks to particular areas in the shade of your natural color. Leaving a few subtle white strands makes the color more believable and long lasting, and turns the clock back to when you just started graying. You can go 2-3 months before retouching. This method works best on men since complete coverage on shorter hair makes it look artificial; however, men will need retouching more frequently.

The easiest method to cover gray is a single process blond. A light shade of blond is applied all over and processed for a specific amount of time. If the right formulation is applied, you can achieve a natural looking color with beautiful highlights. The salt and pepper in the hair will color differently, leaving the hair naturally shaded. This process needs to be retouched every 4-6 weeks.    

To completely cover gray and keep it natural, you must color the entire head from roots to ends when you first color your hair. After that, only the roots should be touched up neatly without overlapping, allowing the color to process the recommended amount of time. If the ends need enrichment, dilute the root formula with water and apply only for a few minutes. If the root formula is very dark, I suggest having a second formula that is much lighter, but with similar color tones, and apply it to the shaft before shampooing. This allows the ends to become richer without becoming too dark. It is not necessary to apply color to the shaft every time you color your hair, but to keep that natural look, the hair must be examined whenever it is colored to determine if the shaft needs color or not.

Everyone thinks that gray hair is resistant and difficult to color – it is not the gray that is the problem, but the formulation. If the hair is more than 50% gray, the formula should be half a shade to a whole shade darker with neutral and gold pigments. Stay away from anything ash since there will not be enough pigment to cover the white, and the end result will be transparent or supply no coverage at all.

You can extend the time in between touch ups by using various color mascaras or color wands such as Color Mark, or if you feel more ambitious you can use one of the popular brands of root touch ups. I suggest you use a color lighter than your formula and blend your roots, rather than try to completely cover the gray and run the risk of making the results too dark. I recommend that you color the areas that are visible such as your part and hairline; trying to do more will most likely interfere with your next coloring.

To dispel a common myth, gray hair is not any coarser than pigmented hair; it only appears that way because the white strands stand out. If you had thick coarse hair before you started to gray, you'll have the same texture after you gray. If your hair was limp and fine, it will still be limp and fine after graying. To help control gray hair, use a small amount of shampoo on the scalp only and rinse thoroughly. Additionally, I recommend using a small amount of conditioner on only the hair shaft – wait until the hair absorbs it and rinse out any excess. This method leaves the hair balanced: a clean scalp and supple moisturized shaft yielding plenty of body, and ease in styling with very little product. For extra smoothness, you may apply silicone oil to the hair shaft before and after styling.

"To color or not to color," is the question that many gray-haired women ask themselves. I believe that no matter how beautiful your gray or silver hair appears, it automatically signals that you are mature and adds an extra 10-15 years to your age. If you opt to keep the gray, yo women's coats ur beautiful hair cannot be your only asset. You must be impeccably dressed, your clothes current, your makeup perfect, and your hairstyle smooth and chic. If not, you risk looking old and sloppy. All of these factors must be assessed in deciding what to do when those sneaky white strands first start making their appearance!

Summer Plastic Surgery Season Heating Up

For many New Orleans plastic surgeons the upcoming summer months signal an upsurge in the number of body shaping cosmetic surgery procedures, according to board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michele M. Cooper (http://www.michelecoopermd.com). She reports an increase in popularity for procedures like liposuction in New Orleans at her plastic surgery practice.

"Many of my patients have been exercising and following a healthy diet in order to prepare for the warmer summer months," Dr. Cooper says. "But they still have certain problem areas that just don't seem to improve– such as 'love handles' or 'saddle bags'. Indian Fashion rocked Washington DC Fashion Week

Los Angeles' largest women's athletic apparel and gear retailer has changed its name. Sporteve is now Sports for Eve.

President D'Lynda Fischer opened the store in July 2006 with a vision for creating a comfortable space for women to purchase clothing, gear and accessories for their active lifestyles. NAPW Washington DC Local Chapter Conducts Wealth-Building Seminar and Networking Event in July

On Tuesday, July 17, 2012, the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) Washington, DC Chapter, in conjunction with the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce conducted a wealth-building seminar, 'Biz Killer: Avoiding Mistakes That Can Destroy You Business'.

The networking event and seminar was held at the headquarters of the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce located on 1495 F Street, NW Washington, DC in the Nation's Capital. The seminar was held from 5:30PM - 7:30PM. The event was a smashing success and hopefully it was the first of many, successful collaborations between the NAPW Washington, DC Chapter and the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

'Biz Killer', was a seminar designed to help each person in attendance improve all aspects of their business and financial lives.

"Everyone in attendance was fortunate enough to hear from a panel of financial experts, who have worked with many of the powerful brokers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area and throughout the United States," said Gerly Sapphire Harris, NAPW Washington DC Chapter President.

These well-educated financial experts covered a wide range of topics including wealth building strategies, business building strategies, as well as strategies to help mitigate tax liabilities, and estate planning. The lively discussion was interactive, which fostered an environment of learning. Each attendee had the opportunity to glean knowledge, information, and advice from a panel of experts that, if implemented, could have positive ramifications for years to come. Education and knowledge will also help combat one of the impediments to financial success and that is fear. The experts not only provided a wealth of knowledge, they also answered every question posed by the audience.

After the financial seminar, the NAPW Washington, DC Chapter President Ms. Gerly Sapphire Harris thanked each of the Committee Board members and their teams for their hard work, dedication, and willingness to share their personal genius. Each member positively influenced the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. Ms. Gerly Sapphire Harris shared, "As we approach the end of the second quarter of 2012 and begin to reflect upon the first half of the year, the NAPW Washington, DC Chapter has a lot to be proud of."

"The lives that we have touched and the positive impact that has been made by the NAPW Washington, DC Chapter has been unprecedented," Gerly said. "As the President of the NAPW Washington, DC Chapter, I must say that I am extremely proud of each Committee Board members and their team. I am also extremely grateful to be associated with such a positive and dynamic group of women. Gerly encouraged each member to continue their efforts on behalf of the community. The NAPW Washington, DC Chapter is dedicated to Service and our February (Women's Shelter Outreach), and May (College for Kids program) outreach efforts was a huge success. In fact, the Chapter's efforts have been featured on WOL, which is a Radio One station. The group received several 'Thank You' letters from families who received clothing that was donated by our members. They also received commendation from the City Gate organization for our contributions to the young children within the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.

In addition to outreach efforts, the Chapter's Meet & Greet event hosted by Mrs. Sonia Montes De Oca, the Director of Programs, was very successful as well. The NAPW Washington, DC Chapter Committee Board is such a great team that is has been dubbed the 'Dream Team'. Gerly gave the Committee Board this name because they make it happen and get the job done in excellence.

Ms. Gerly Sapphire Harris thanked everyone in attendance for their participation in the meeting, and welcomed the new members. Types Of Dogs That Are Popular

Shirt-wise, there are so many options. Call me crazy, but I'm such a huge fan of the whole belted shirt. However, I'd go with a brighter shirt since the skirt and shoes would be black. A nice plum color would be great and it's really big right now. A nice voluminous shirt would look cute too. A fuller skirt would work with all of these as well.

For the more casual date, I don't think there is anything wrong with a nice pair of dark-wash jeans with heels. A nice pair of ballet flats would work too. I love a nice bold sweater. You could add some nice bold silver jewelry to pull it all together. If a sweater seems too hot, go for a fitted 3/4 length top instead.

I am a huge fan of your idea of dark wash jeans and the sweater--personally I'd go with red or another bright color. The ankle boots sound cute. Girls, Tips On What To Wear On Your First Date

First dates are so much fun. Kudos on basically landing your guy. Okay, so these two possible dates couldn't possibly be more opposite fashion-wise! I'm hoping you'll know in advance what you'll be doing.

I'll give you a few different ideas. For a dressy play and dinner, I personally would go with a simple black pencil skirt. It is perfect for basically every occasion and you won't look overdone, or too casual. Some black peep-toe heels would look great with this, or even a strappy shoe.

Shirt-wise, there are so many options. Call me crazy, but I'm such a huge fan of the whole belted shirt. However, I'd go with a brighter shirt since the skirt and shoes would be black. A nice plum color would be great and it's really big right now. A nice voluminous shirt would look cute too. A fuller skirt would work with all of these as well.

For the more casual date, I don't think there is anything wrong with a nice pair of dark-wash jeans with heels. A nice pair of ballet flats would work too. I love a nice bold sweater. You could add some nice bold silver jewelry to pull it all together. If a sweater seems too hot, go for a fitted 3/4 length top instead.

I am a huge fan of your idea of dark wash jeans and the sweater--personally I'd go with red or another bright color. The ankle boots sound cute. It's probably getting a little chilly for open-toed shoes anyway (I just live on the dangerous side). Any type of heels and jeans just looks so classy in my opinion. The cropped jacket sounds cute, as does the velvet peacoat. The jacket says "I'm such a fun gal!" and the peacoat says "I'm fun but mucho classy!" so it is up to you. Both choices sound great.

You asked about where I get my fashion knowledge from and I guess it's a few different things. I have always been a huge fan of "What not to Wear" and other makeover stuff, but recently I've been working at a TV station in Boston helping out the style producer for their fashion segment.

Their's a big difference between a basketball game and the theater, but I'll give it my best shot! You need to wear something classic and versatile so I'm leaning toward nice black pants and a dressiest black sweater...maybe something with a low scoop neck that's fitted with long or 3/4 length sleeves or a black sweater with a v-neck/wrap front. Just not something boxy! You can wear a white or yellow gold necklace...whichever matches your watch and bracelet. Pair the outfit with high heeled black boots and you'll be all set. That's what I would do if I were faced with two such different possibilities!

But don't panic because this is an easy one!!! Wear high heeled women's jackets online brown pumps and a matching brown handbag. The shade of brown is up to you...can be dark or milk chocolate, espresso, a reddish brown, etc. It will all work, but make sure your handbag matches the shoes.

You can wear a great necklace since the neckline is square. Wear yellow gold or natural toned beads, but have the necklace be short so it lays on your chest above the neckline of the dress. You can also wear a gold bracelet and watch. Don't go overboard because the dress sounds classic and your accessories should be as well!

Homemade gifts are always great for family and friends because they're thoughtful. So on a cold winter day before Christmas, rally the kids and get them to create an Indian notepad, cookie tray or colorful shelf trimming paper.

Indian Note Pad

An Indian makes an interesting drawing, and a note pad makes a useful item, so they ought to make a very good project together.

Trace an Indian with a pencil on a piece of stiff cardboard. Make it from six to eight inches tall. Be sure to include feathers, and other things common to an Indian of early days. He might even be holding a bow and arrow. Color the picture with crayons or water colors. Now cut the Indian out.

For a pad, you can either make your own from blank slips of paper, or buy one at the store. Be sure the pad is shorter and narrower than the India women's jackets n. What is more pleasant to look at than a tray full of homemade cookies? But of course the tray must first be made. Here is how you can make a tray that will serve cookies, cold drinks, or anything else that you wish to serve.

Cut out a piece of flat wood, nine by 12 inches in size. Plywood is excellent, though you may use any kind of wood you have about. Sandpaper it until smooth. For a border, nail pieces of rope all around the tray, about 1/2 inch in from the edges. Make two smooth blocks of wood, about one inch square and two inches long. Nail them at each end to serve as handles.

You may decorate your tray with pictures, or paint a design on it. A coat of varnish will give your finished tray an attractive appearance as well as protect it from wear

Shelf Trimming Paper

Here is home handcraft at its best. Every home has shelves. Here is an opportunity to add a touch of prettiness to them. You can decorate the shelves in your room or in the kitchen or anywhere else where it is needed.

If the shelves already have shelf paper on them, you can make your own designs on the overhanging borders. If there is no paper at all on them, you can make the entire shelf paper. To do this, simply measure the length and width of your shelf and cut your paper accordingly, allowing enough paper in the width for an overhanging border of a reasonable length, according to the height of the shelf. Usually, two or three inches is good.

You have your choice of several methods of adding decorations to the overhanging borders. A simple method would be to cut out colored pictures or designs from old magazines and paste them on. In this case, gather pictures that form a similar theme. For example, for a sea scene, you could clip pictures of boats, fishermen, fish and the seashore. For a forest scene, you could use trees, lakes and animals.

A good final touch would be to cut a wavy edge on the bottom of the border piece.
